Hawthorn is a Shrub or tree from the family Rosaceae. Its main trunk diverge into sharp edges branches. It leaves are pointed at their base and lobed at their heads. The flowers grow on short branches in dens mock- umbels, in white color. The fruit is a berry-like small apple. During ripening it becomes yellow in color and very tasty. .The hawthorn Fruits, leaves, flowers and bark are used in the traditional medicine to heal heart disease, high blood pressure, arteriosclerosis, high blood cholesterol, difficulty in breathing, nervous attacks, seizures, insomnia, asthma, throat infections and irregular periods.

Dip 2 heaping teaspoons of hawthorn flowers in a glass of boiling water. Wait 5- minutes and drink. The recommended dosage is 3-2 glasses a day for a month.
This treatment improves the blood flow in the coronary arteries and thereby reduces the risk of angina pectoris.
Israeli Arabs use its fruits for making jams called "Tattlat Za'arur." There are also farmers who blanch the fruit, add grape juice and prepare from it a drink called "Sharab Za'arur" - Hawthorn Wine. Its hard bark is used for making hand grinder for grinding coffee beans and spices.

According to ancient myths, Hawthorn grew from the lightning. In ancient Greek the tree was considered auspicious and it became a symbol of the unity of married couple. In the wedding ceremonies, invited guests held torches from its branches, for lighting the way for the couple to the wedding chamber.
In French it was called "noble thorn" because they believed that Jesus Crown of thorns was made from Spiny Hawthorn.
